Milão, onde meu coração se sente em casa

Milan, where my heart feels at home

Some cities simply choose us. Milan is that city for me. It may divide opinions — some love it, others not so much — but I’m definitely on the side that loves it. And loves it deeply. It’s, without a doubt, my favorite city in the world.

Milan is known as the city of the 3 F’s: Finance, Fashion, and Furniture. It’s the financial center of Italy, one of the world’s fashion capitals, and the beating heart of furniture design — home to the unmissable Salone del Mobile, held every April, transforming the city into a creative explosion.

But what makes Milan so special to me goes far beyond that. There’s something in the air, you know? A mix of understated elegance and modernity wrapped in history, that makes me feel embraced. My heart feels calm here. It’s pure inspiration.

And to begin sharing a little of my Milan, I chose a walking route around Piazza del Duomo, with places that, to me, truly reflect the Milanese soul I love so much.

Duomo di Milano

The tour starts with the imposing Duomo di Milano — which, for me who loves Gothic architecture, is undoubtedly the most beautiful cathedral in the world. Going inside is essential; every moment among the columns and stained-glass windows is worth it. And if you can, buy the ticket that includes rooftop access. Seeing Milan from above is truly special — especially in the late afternoon, at sunset.

Museum of the Renaissance & Royal Palace of Milan

Right beside the Duomo are two cultural highlights: the Museum of the Renaissance, which always hosts incredible exhibitions (like the one by Dolce & Gabbana), and the Royal Palace of Milan, grand and full of life.

Lunch with a view

My lunch tip: the Ristorante Vista Duomo. Make a reservation in advance and ask for a window table — dining with the cathedral as your backdrop is a memory with a special flavor.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Then head to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a glass-and-iron masterpiece. On one side, the dazzling designer storefronts. On the other, the charming Libreria Bocca, founded in 1775. This contrast between tradition and modernity wins me over every time. And of course, stop for a coffee and sweet at Marchesi 1824 — a true Milanese ritual and one of mine, too.

Piazza della Scala & Teatro alla Scala

Leaving the Galleria, you’ll arrive at Piazza della Scala, home to the Leonardo da Vinci monument and the iconic Teatro alla Scala, inaugurated in 1778. One of the most important opera houses in the world, it has hosted legends like Maria Callas, Verdi, Pavarotti, and many others.

Via Montenapoleone

Continue along Via Alessandro Manzoni until you reach the refined Via Montenapoleone, in the heart of the Fashion District. Even if you're not shopping, strolling here is like feeling the pulse of international fashion and luxury.

Aperitivo with a view

To end the day, I’d head back to Piazza del Duomo for a traditional aperitivo (a must for any good Italian!). A classic Aperol Spritz at Terrazza Aperol is the perfect closing touch. If you don’t want to wait in line for a terrace table — with a stunning view from another angle of the Duomo — make a reservation.

For this visit to the Duomo and one of my favorite corners of the city, I chose the MIA 65 — one of my darlings, too.

I’ll be back soon with more — because Milan, for me, has many chapters.

With love,
Tati Benvenuto
